The Story of the Song

A crooner’s song

Bobby grew up on Frank Sinatra and the great standards, and “Stuck on You” is where that side of him first moved to the center of an album. Accounts of the session describe a 60-piece orchestra that included musicians who had played with Sinatra and Tony Bennett. A Japanese review of the album said the song has a classic feel that recalls the 1940s.

The album

The album came out first in Japan on March 6, 1991, under the title Solid Ground, and was then released in the US on Bobby’s own Sin-Drome label as Stuck on You. It reached No. 5 on Billboard’s jazz albums chart and returned him to the R&B album chart. The album’s players included Dave Koz, Richard Elliot, John Patitucci and the Tower of Power horns.

Among the standards

Five years later, the song appeared again on Blue Condition, Bobby’s 1996 album of standards, where it sits comfortably beside “Angel Eyes” and “I Get a Kick Out of You.”
